Steven Gerrard said the forward’s planned Liverpool exit serves all sides and revealed he urged Salah not to leave the club “under a cloud.”

Steven Gerrard said the Egyptian’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season is “in everyone’s best interests,” and revealed that he spoke to Salah earlier this season to urge him not to leave the club on bad terms.

Speaking on The Overlap, Gerrard said Salah’s public dispute with Liverpool manager Arne Slot had convinced him that the relationship had reached a difficult point. He added that the timing of the departure looked right for both the player and the club.

Gerrard added he contacted Salah directly after the winger’s explosive interview in December, when Salah said the club was throwing him under the bus, and said his relationship with Slot had broken down. Gerrard said he told Salah to protect the legacy he had built over eight or nine years at Anfield and to leave “the right way.”

He also said Salah was still emotional at the time because he had gone in and out of the team and felt upset by the situation. Gerrard continued, saying that it would have been a shame if Salah had left in January under those circumstances.

The Legendary midfielder touched on how his own experience as both a player and a manager helped him understand both sides of the dispute. He said players often struggle to accept reduced roles, but managers still have to make decisions they believe serve the team.

Salah announced last week that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season. The 33-year-old will depart after scoring 255 goals in 435 appearances and helping Liverpool win two Premier League titles, the Champions League and other major honours.
